Cogolin
Between land and sea
Ideally situated between land and sea, Cogolin is a village with many facets. Take a detour into Provence, and discover its art artisans and unusual cultural heritage, not forgetting this gateway to the infinite sea…
A showcase for arts and crafts
To start your journey, visit one of the famous pipe factories. These works of art, carved from briar, are hand-engraved with the silver rooster, the town’s symbol. And what do they make in Cogolin with the Provence cane? Reeds for saxophones, clarinets and other wind instruments. I could also mention the glassworks, the carpet factory, the local produce, but how could I resist… a tart: the famous tropézienne, the one and only, the real thing, the gourmet favorite, made in Cogolin to a secret recipe.
A rich heritage to discover
You’ll discover the charm of this picturesque village as you stroll through the narrow streets to the top of the hill: vaulted passageways, serpentine porches, the Clock Tower, the Saint-Sauveur church and its sundial, all bear witness to a rich past. Push open a door? The Chapelle Saint-Roch and its art exhibitions. Put on your seven-legged boots and another face of the village is revealed: its natural surroundings. From the surrounding vineyards to the valley of La Mole, from the undergrowth of Hermitan to the banks of the Giscle, Cogolin also reveals itself on guided tours of the village and on country walks organized by the Tourist Office. And that’s not all!
An open door to the Gulf
For Cogolin is a commune that extends… right down to the sea. It even boasts one of the largest ports in the Gulf, with a marina encompassing Port Cogolin and Les Marines and boasting 2,000 moorings, shops, boat hire companies and restaurants on the quayside. And what can we say about the beach, set at the far end of the Gulf, with Sainte-Maxime and Saint-Tropez facing each other to guard the entrance: it’s a great place to take the plunge! Lovers of the deep blue sea flock here in summer for a swim. Others prefer a trip in an optimist or catamaran from the nautical base.
Celebrating culture
Cogolin has established itself as a year-round place to live, a skilful alchemy of cultures and lifestyles, punctuated by events aimed at a wide audience, including the Fête du Coq, comedy shows, Le Lézard café-théâtre, the “Terre-Mer” summer festival, Les Bravades, the Trail O’Ween, and the “Monde de Cogolino”. There are also numerous concerts at the Maurin des Maures center, and attractive events for the festive season. Cogolin loves to honor the 4 seasons!
A little background
Legend has it that the boat carrying the body of the knight Torpès from Pisa, Italy, ran aground on the shores of Saint-Tropez, and with its ill-fated passengers – a rooster and a dog – crashed to the bottom of the Gulf, in a reedy swamp. There, the rooster flew into a field of… flax. And the rooster and the flax became Cogolin. The gallinaceous bird became its emblem. Over the centuries, the village underwent the history of Provence, its counts and then the Wars of Religion.
