Grimaud

Grimaud

The sea has its village

Here, at the edge of the rock, along the water, everything is emotion, harmony and plenitude. Grimaud offers the best of the South: stroll around the medieval village, the mill, the vineyards, the beaches, and a rare gem: the lakeside town of Port Grimaud.

A village blessed by the gods

The heart of the perched village, wonderfully restored, has retained all its authenticity: cobbled streets, facades with vaulted arches, pastel-colored windows with flowering shutters, squares lined with bougainvillea. The village discovery trail, with its churches and chapels, bears witness to a rich past whose traces can be found in the Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires. The hilltop feudal castle guarded access to a territory (today’s Golfe de Saint-Tropez) known as “Le Freinet” from the Middle Ages to the French Revolution. The view from the top is unforgettable. Further down, visit the Saint-Roch mill, the prelude to a stroll to the Pont des Fées, where you’ll take a vow to… But it must remain a secret!

The lakeside town of Port Grimaud

You’ll immediately fall under the spell of Port Grimaud, born in 1966 from the imagination of visionary architect François Spoerry. As you stroll along the quays, you’ll be seduced by the multicolored facades of the 2,000 fishermen’s cottages with their Roman tiles, moored boats and Venetian bridges linking islets adorned with colonnades, retro lampposts and flower-filled basins. The lakeside city’s 90-hectare labyrinth of canals can only be seen from the water! If you add the view from the church, the lively terraces, the 2 weekly markets and the water sports on the beach, you’ll understand the international aura of this exceptional place.

Celebrating cultures

The village’s many galleries, contemporary art exhibitions, the painters’ and sculptors’ salon, musical evenings, the celebration of local traditions, the Grimaldines World Music Festival, the Festival of Light, the Plage de Rock Festival, enchant the village lanes, the castle balconies and the seaside all year round. Grimaud’s cultural vocation showcases its rich historical heritage. And back again for the Euro Festival: 12,000 Harleys in the Gulf, just imagine!

A benevolent nature

Nature is everywhere, in a dazzling diversity of colors. From cork oak forests to sandy beaches, from renowned vineyards to unspoilt coves, from the mountains to the sea, with the plain and its rivers as a link, Grimaud offers a wide range of leisure activities. And if you’re more the contemplative type, take the time to witness the daily metamorphosis of light, the explosion of the orange-red sky at sunset, with the medieval castle as a backdrop.

A little background

Grimaud’s history dates back to Neolithic times. In the 11th century, its steep peak attracted the attention of strategists. In 1058, a cartulary mentions the name “Grimaldo”, nothing to do with the Grimaldi family of Monaco (12th century). Its location in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez enabled it to control access from the north and the Maures massif, resulting in an early defensive occupation. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the Counts of Provence ruled over Freinet. Life was agricultural. Until the 17th century, the fortified castle commanded the Gulf of Grimaud.
